Reinforced Soil Wall Overview
Reinforced Soil Retaining Structures or Mechanically Stabilized Earth Structures, combine compacted granular soil with tensile reinforcement such as polymeric geogrids or galvanized steel strips. These systems provide high stability, rapid construction, flexibility and excellent seismic performance, replacing many conventional RCC and gravity wall options.
Components of the System
Reinforcement: Geogrids, geostrips provide tensile strength and soil confinement; steel strips offer stiffness and long-term durability.
Facia: Precast concrete panels, segmental blocks, welded mesh, gabions or wrapped geotextile facings.
Reinforced Fill: Well-graded granular soil meeting drainage, density and friction requirements.
Connections: Mechanical connectors for steel strips; friction or positive-facing connectors for geogrids.
Functioning of the System
Reinforced Soil Retaining Structures function through soil–reinforcement interaction. Reinforcement layers resist tensile forces, while compacted soil provides confinement. The composite mass resists earth pressures, distributes loads efficiently, and allows controlled deformation without structural distress. High pull-out resistance ensures long-term performance.
Design Standards
The design of reinforced soil walls and slopes is based on well-established principles that address internal stability (tensile rupture and pullout), external stability (sliding, overturning, bearing), and global stability. Standards such as BS 8006, FHWA, BIS, IRC guidelines provide the design framework.
